Collecting My Composure After This Quote

leave a comment »

While typing this I’m listening on the radio to the CEO of the Pennsylvania Turnpike defending turnpike toll-collectors, saying it’s a “hard job.” N*gga plz. Oh, this is a great quote. “We trained them to say ‘thank you’ and ‘good morning.’” For $18/hour plus benefits just to collect change you need special training to say “have a nice day”? God I love this state. And the kicker is that a year or so ago these people went on STRIKE.

Retire This Clemente Talk

leave a comment »

One topic I’ve talked about the last few days is the 2006 All-Star Game. Now there’s talk about Latino groups wanting Major League Baseball to retire Roberto Clemente’s jersey for every team, just like the case with Jackie Robinson’s #42.

Commissioner Bud Selig interrupted Tuesday’s All-Star Game in the fourth inning to pay homage to Clemente by presenting his widow and two of their three sons the Commissioner’s Achievement Award. Players from both the American and National League All-Star teams wore yellow wristbands displaying Clemente’s initials.

MLB also hands out a yearly award in his name to the player who best combines on-field performance with humanitarian work, and it holds a Roberto Clemente Day at every ballpark in September.

But for about a year, a group of Latino activists has lobbied for MLB to go a step further and confer on Clemente a distinction accorded only one other player by retiring his No. 21 from all the teams, as baseball did with Jackie Robinson’s No. 42 in 1997.

Personally, I don’t like the idea of either number getting league-wide treatment. Yeah, I know OMG RACISM~! I’m not going to grumble about Robinson’s jersey being retired by every team; but I would rather just have the team who faced the bigotry get the notoriety . But that’s just me, though.

Kick A Dirty Terrorist When He’s Down

leave a comment »

I thought I was done with this topic, but the kicks just keep on coming. Apparently, the reason Zidaine head-butted that Italian player was because he was calling the Frenchie a “dirty terrorist” and said some mean things about his mom. A “dirty terrorist” – them’s some fighting words, which says quite a bit for a Frenchman. I also heard Zidaine’s mom has gotten into the fray, but what I find hilarious is that the Iran also applauds Zidaine’s actions; and he didn’t even have to blow himself up. According to this article,

“The head of Iran’s external relations committee has sent a letter to Zidane congratulating him for his ‘logical’ reaction and “timely” defense against an alleged insult to his ‘human and Islamic’ identity.’”

With the Iranians in your corner how can one not feel encouraged?
