First Amendment: Mellencamp Should Check It Out

with 2 comments

I always liked John Cougar Mellencamp. I know the guy’s a commie, but I enjoyed his early work. I even had a bit of respect for his populist opinions early on — “Rain On The Scarecrow” still gives me chills whenever I listen to it played. Even though I didn’t care for his work after he dropped the Cougar from his name, I just treated him as another hippie whose loony opinions I had to accept as a side effect for producing hits like “Pink Houses,” “Pop Singer” and “Cherry Bomb.” Now he’s just a dumbass.

“I don’t have a cell phone. I mean, I can get on a computer and I can text people and e-mail people and I can look up stuff for information but I made the mistake once of reading blogs and I’m not doing that again,” he said. “I believe in freedom of speech but I also have the freedom to say, ‘You’re an idiot. You shouldn’t be writing things like that because you’re an idiot.’” He particularly condemns rude an unaccountable comments in blogs and YouTube videos.

“I don’t think people fought and gave their lives so that some guy can sit in his bedroom and be mean. I don’t think that’s what freedom of speech is,” he continued. “Freedom of speech is really about assembly — for us to collectively have an idea. We want to get our point of view out so we can assemble and I can appoint you to be the spokesman. That’s freedom of speech — to be able to collectively speak for a sector of people. But somehow it’s turned into ‘I can be an asshole whenever I feel like, say whatever I like, be disrespectful to people and not be courteous.’ It’s not good for our society. Not being courteous is not really freedom of speech…

Interesting to see the shift in perspective once your candidate gets in office. Wonder if he thought the same thing when W. was in office? Well, at least he didn’t perform this song in his bedroom. From 2004.

Whoopi Goldberg delivered an X-rated rant full of sexual innuendoes against President Bush last night at a Radio City gala that raised $7.5 million for the newly minted Democratic ticket of John Kerry and John Edwards.

Waving a bottle of wine, she fired off a stream of vulgar sexual wordplays on Bush’s name in a riff about female genitalia, and boasted that she’d refused to let Team Kerry clear her material.

“I Xeroxed my behind and I folded it up in an envelope and I sent it back with a big kiss mark on because we’re Democrats — we’re not afraid to laugh,” she said.

She addressed fresh-faced vice-presidential candidate Edwards as “Kid,” and “young Mr. Edwards” and cracked, “He looks like he is about 18 ”

“I’m going to card his ass tomorrow.”

Other celebs also competed to bash Bush. Singer John Mellencamp sang a specially written song that called the president “just another cheap thug” and ridiculed him as the “Texas bambino.”

And while I’m at it, let me look up that First Amendment thing.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Interesting. There’s that whole right to speech and then that whole right to assemble. There’s also the freedom of the press between speech/assembly, so speech and assembly are indeed separate endeavors. Have you ever looked at the Constitution, John? I’m no scholar, but do you have any idea the libel that took place during the early days of the printing press? Christ, those rags were almost as bad, if not worse, than today’s blogs. Get a fucking grip. If you are going to whine like a bitch whenever someone says something “mean,” then keep your computer and/or radio turned off.

And for the record, the official computer of KK’s Korner is NOT in the bedroom. It is located six billion feet beneath the earth in a steel bunker.

Well, actually, it’s on the second floor of the kkk Manor. Close enough.
