Being Trapped In A Cell Phone

leave a comment »

So tonight the better half and I went out to the mall and got some phat new cell phones.

Mrs. kkk gets this discount through her workplace and we share four phones — two for us, two for my in-laws — at some family rate.

This is the only reason I have a cell phone. I hate these things.

I understand the need for cell phones, but these things are nothing more than an electronic leash. With the exception of calling Mrs. kkk to let her know I’m backed up in traffic and that I’ll let her know when I’m closer to picking her up from work (we commute together), I never use my cell phone. OK, I lied. I sometimes call her from the grocery store if I forgot what she wanted from the weekly trip. OK, I lied again. We also use cell phones during Black Friday to coordinate our locations within a store. But that’s all. For the most part.

Actually, here’s what I really want to bitch about. I just want a phone. I don’t care about texting. I don’t care about taking pictures. I just want a phone with big buttons.

When the smoke settled, I ended up with an LG something-or-other. It calls other people and … and … it has this mini-keyboard compartment thing for texting that I have no clue how to unlock. Why did the better half and I agree on this model? It was the cheapest available and was buy-one-get-one-free. Now I can’t wait to get those debit rebate cards that work anywhere except the actual store you want to use them at. I’m sure sometime this weekend Mrs. kkk will take a picture of the cats on my phone and make that my phone’s wallpaper.

And the funny thing is that after a week I’ll get used to this new phone’s smaller number pad and the fact it no longer fits in my cell phone holder device. Then two years later when it’s time to get another phone I’ll be bitching because that new model will have even SMALLER buttons and a bunch of features I’ll be indifferent towards.

I’m not a technophobe, but cell phones just don’t do it for me. If I want to go on the Internet, I’ll do it in the comfort of my home in front of a 23-inch computer monitor. When I’m out, I’m out. Then again, I listen to an MP3 player when I’m out shopping, so perhaps I’m not the one to be issuing commentary on the subject of social activities.
