Phoning-In This Family Moment

Good lord. The old man called me. For those that don’t know, I haven’t spoken to him since February of 2007.

I kept telling myself during this time to just laugh and nod; it’ll be over soon. Ands an added bonus, half of the conversation was spent with him saying, “What?” to his wife when she tried to chime in on the phone call from a distance.

I figured the statute of limitations was over from our most recent altercation. Besides, it will probably only be another phone call or two until the next blowup which will have us not talking again for another several years. (Please note I’m not actually complaining about the time apart.)

If you learn anything from reading KK’s Korner, peep the following game being spit: Never answer the phone when a person you don’t want to talk to calls on a holiday. Wait until early- to mid-afternoon to call back and say you were doing something at that time. (I used the “shoveling snow/salting driveway excuse.”) Chances are when you call back that person will not be home and you can simply leave a message. If they are home, chances are they are about to head out to another person’s house or expect company to arrive so the phone call with you will be rushed. (That’s what happened when I called the other parent today.)

Yeah, I’m a pretty terrible son. As the saying (sorta) goes: Mama, don’t let your boys grow up to be latch-key kids.

Christmas Conundrum

leave a comment »

Maybe it’s because I don’t have kids, but I’m not a big “Christmas” person. It just seems … lame … for adults to be swapping gifts the morning of December 25. Hell, when the better half and I used to do this dated routine, I often thought, “What made you think I wanted THAT?” or “I’m sure you didn’t get this when it was on sale.” This is actually the primary reason we do the Black Friday thing — we’re both grown-ups, we both know what we want. Just get it when it’s cheap(er).

However, on December 25 I always seem to take a few moments sometimes during the morning hours and think about the millions of households that are simultaneously opening up presents. No, this isn’t one of those, “keep “Christ” in “Christmas” rants. Quite the opposite, actually. Sometimes a kid’s gotta be a kid, and opening presents on Jesus’ b-day is part of being a kid.
